17세기 전반 대구지역 교육기구의 재건과 운영－관학과 사학의 관계를 중심으로－

초록

This study examines the reconstruction and operation of educational institutions in the Daegu region during the early 17th century, following the devastation of the Imjin War. Focusing on the relationship between state- sponsored hyanggyo and privately established seowon, the paper analyzes how these institutions functioned in the local context and complemented one another in the educational system. While hyanggyo served as formal public schools where Confucian rites, lectures, civil service exam preparation, and local discourse took place, they were substantially supported and operated by local sadaebu elites. Seowon, such as the reconstructed Yeongyeong Seowon, were reestablished under the influence of Yi Hwang and Jeong Gu's educational philosophies, emphasizing wigi ji hak (learning for self-cultivation) and fostering scholarly communities through lectures and residential study (geojeop). Drawing on first-hand sources such as Modang ilgi by Son Cheonul, Nakjae ilgi by Seo Sawon, and Chogan ilgi by Gwon Munhae, this study reveals that hyanggyo and seowon were not in a binary relationship of state versus private education, but rather functioned in a complementary and interactive manner. These institutions became key arenas where state authority and local intellectuals coalesced to rebuild postwar governance and moral education in Joseon society.
