한국 의사학과 의료인문학의 위상과 역할

초록

It seems that medical humanities are no longer an unfamiliar concept in medical schools. However, the future direction of medical humanities remains unclear. Recent events like the 2024 physicians’ protest and the move to introduce a health systems science curriculum in medical schools have deepened concerns about the direction of medical humanities. To examine the future direction of medical humanities, including the history of medicine, we will first look at their current status. Starting with definitions of the history of medicine and medical humanities, we will explore their introduction and historical context in Korea, analyze their current state, and consider their future direction. It is important to note that it is difficult to evaluate the status of these fields as a single discipline, and their introduction and growth in Korea took place against the backdrop of a crisis in Korean medicine and the trend toward globalized medical education. We also need to remember that the current state of medical humanities in Korea is not the same as that in the West. This article argues that medical humanities, including the history of medicine, should solidify their relationship with Korean medicine and provide answers to questions surrounding it, becoming a new form of intervention and an attempt to address the challenges in the medical field. This is not limited to medical schools but can encompass various external initiatives as well.
