Unmet Needs in Daily Life and Depression Among People with Disabilities: A Comparative Study by Disability Type

초록

This study aims to examine the impact of unmet needs in daily life on depression among individuals with disabilities, with particular attention to variations by type of disability. To achieve this, data from the fourth wave of the Disability and Life Panel Survey, comprising 5,024 respondents, were analyzed using multiple regression techniques to test the proposed research hypotheses. The results reveal that levels of depression and unmet needs among persons with disabilities vary significantly according to both demographic characteristics and disability-related factors. Furthermore, unmet needs in areas such as personal hygiene and grooming, as well as learning activities, were found to have a statistically significant positive effect on depression across the entire sample. However, the specific domains of daily living in which unmet needs influenced depression differed depending on the type of disability. Based on these findings, the study proposes a series of policy and practice recommendations aimed at addressing the diverse unmet needs of individuals with disabilities in their daily lives, with the goal of mitigating depressive symptoms and promoting overall mental well-being.
