초록

This discussion focuses on the existence of Japanese people who spoke the colonial language within a colonial bilingual system, analyzing why they used the Korean language, and how Koreans perceived their own mother tongue when spoken by the colonizers. The number of Japanese speakers of the Joseon language increased after Deputy Governor-General Mizuno(水野錬太郎) encouraged Japanese officials to learn Joseon language. Especially Yeom Sang-seop's novels frequently feature Japanese characters who speak the Joseon language. The colonizers deliberately used Joseon language to monitor and humiliate them. Unlike the Joseon people, who were expected to be fluent in the "national language", the Japanese who mimicked the vulgar colonial language had the privilege of not being fluent. Furthermore, the responsibility of deciphering this "broken" Joseon language was placed entirely on the Joseon people. Their mother tongue, when articulated by the tongues of others, created a peculiar sense of alienation. The Joseon people had to strain to instinctively understand and interpret it. Consequently, while the Joseon language remained the mother tongue of the Joseon people, it was no longer a comfortable or familiar language.
