초록

This study investigates the Naebang-gasa works (Ladies' Gasa) from the formative years of Eunchon Jo Ae-yeong (1911-2000), examining the transformation of her critical consciousness in relation to her life-historical context. Her formative years are divided into three phases: (1) her Yeongyang period, (2) her Paihwa Girls' High School years, and (3) the period surrounding her marriage. An analysis of five gasa from this time reveals a three-stage transformation. Initially, in Yeongyang, her works show a strong aspiration for modern education. Subsequently, her school-era works reflect practical resistance, stemming from her active role in the student independence movement. Finally, her post-marriage gasa demonstrates an intensified engagement with female identity, shaped by experiences like an arranged marriage, the hardships of life with in-laws, and childbirth. These works are significant for illustrating the formation of authorship for a female Naebang-gasa writer, empirically illustrating the ambivalence of contemporary female enlightenment discourse, and documenting the internal growth of a female subject during Korea's modern transition.
