· Research topics: This study aims to translate and validate the Bergen Shopping Addiction Scale (BSAS) into Korean. · Research background: Shopping addiction is a critical issue closely related to individuals' psychosocial problems. However, reliable and valid tools to systematically measure shopping addiction remain insufficient. Existing shopping addiction scales fail to reflect changes in modern shopping environments or to incorporate the essential criteria of addiction. To address these limitations, this study aims to develop a new tool that can effectively measure shopping addiction. · Differences from prior research: The Bergen Shopping Addiction Scale was developed to overcome the limitations of existing scales and serves as a concise yet reliable tool for measuring major symptoms of shopping addiction. This study provides a tool to reliably and validly measure shopping addiction in Korea by adapting and validating the BSAS to fit the Korean cultural context, where no prior adaptation had been made. Unlike previous studies, this research reflects modern shopping behaviors and verifies the cultural relevance of the scale using data collected from Korean adults. · Research method: Data were collected from 303 adults aged 18 and older through an online survey. Participants responded to the Korean version of the BSAS as well as scales measuring compulsive buying behavior, self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. The collected data were analyzed for internal consistency, confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity to verify the reliability and validity of the scale. · Research results: The Korean version of the BSAS demonstrated high internal consistency and was found to have appropriate levels of convergent validity. Confirmatory factor analysis based on the original one-factor structure revealed low fit indices for certain items, leading to the adoption of a modified model comprising six items. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study’s contributions and expected impacts are as follows. This research provides a reliable and valid tool for assessing shopping addiction in Korea. This tool can serve as a foundational resource for studying shopping addiction and developing intervention programs in the Korean context. Furthermore, future studies can apply the Korean version of the BSAS to various population groups, enabling a deeper understanding of the prevalence and characteristics of shopping addiction in Korean society.
