초록

The early modern period in England proves intriguing in the context of print culture and authorship. Manuscripts remained a vital means of transmission during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries due to political and social contexts. Concurrently, the emergence of print culture led to the gradual absorption of literary works into its framework. This paper focuses on exploring the dynamics of print culture and authorship, centering on John Donne. The research delves into the interesting fact that only a few of Donne’s poetry works, which established his modern reputation, were printed during his lifetime. By examining Donne’s decisions regarding transmission methods and his reflections upon them, we can discern how issues such as authorial authority, text ownership, and control of interpretation were analyzed and addressed. Additionally, it sheds light on how print culture facilitated the transfer of sociocultural authority to a wider readership.
