초록

This paper aims to investigate Liverpudlian Lear represented in <My Kingdom>, a screen adaptation of King Lear. Don Boyd, the director, represents the capitalist economic phenomenon in Liverpool, as well as the various conflicts of Liverpudlian Lear(Sandeman) and his family in the film. After his wife’s death by a drug-addicted boy, Sandeman(crime boss) and his daughters such as Kath(brothel madame), Tracy(football club owner), and Jo(ex-drug addict), come into conflicts. This paper emphasizes reviews of viewers on digital platforms along with the analysis of family’s conflicts and Liverpool’s negative economy history. That is because reviews of viewers on digital platforms enrich the archive of Shakespearean adaptations and play essential roles in sharing the collective cultural memory. Above all, prostitution and drugs in Liverpool are related to Sandeman’s family and act as a significant signifier in family disintegration. Ironically, all chaos, such as mugging and drug dealing in Liverpool, comes back to Sandeman himself. It’s also tragic that the impotence of local authorities in the global economy has only resulted in the’ show business, sport or crime’ of Liverpool. In sum, it is evident that the collapse of Sandeman’s family reflects all victims within global capitalism. In evaluating the screen adaptation of King Lear, it is significant that his work of reproducing Shakespeare’s meticulous and sharp exploration of social phenomena by director Boyd in the 21st century contributes to expanding the scope of Shakespeare’s adaptation topic research. In addition, owing to online re-mediations, such as video-streaming sites, reviews, or YouTube on digital platforms, Shakespeare’s work can be appropriated and reinterpreted timely.
