The Relationship Between Adolescents’ Perfectionism Types and Life Satisfaction: The Multiple Mediating Effects of Self-Compassion and Self-Handicapping

초록

This study investigated the causal relationships among adolescents’ evaluation concern perfectionism, personal standards perfectionism, self-compassion, self-handicapping, and life satisfaction. A total of 447 middle and high school students from the Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and Ulsan regions in South Korea participated by completing validated scales for each construct. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were conducted, followed by structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine multiple mediation effects. The significance of indirect effects was assessed using bootstrapping procedures. Results showed that evaluation concern perfectionism predicted lower life satisfaction through decreased self-compassion and increased self-handicapping. In contrast, personal standards perfectionism was associated with greater life satisfaction via higher self-compassion and lower self-handicapping. Of the two mediators, only self-compassion exerted a significant mediating effect, whereas self-handicapping did not directly influence life satisfaction. These findings highlight the distinct psychological mechanisms of perfectionism subtypes and emphasize the critical role of self-compassion as a protective emotional resource. Interventions that promote self-compassion may help mitigate the adverse effects of maladaptive perfectionism and enhance adolescents’ overall well-being.
