영어트랙 유학생을 위한 한국어 초급 교재 개발 사례 연구

초록

This study aims to present a case of developing a beginner-level Korean language textbook tailored for international students enrolled in English Track programs at Korean universities. Unlike regular international students who are required to submit TOPIK level 3–4 for admission, English Track students are allowed to enter without a Korean proficiency requirement. However, despite this institutional feature, they face serious difficulties not only in everyday communication but also in managing academic affairs and adapting to Korean culture and society. Existing textbooks, primarily designed for language institute learners, are unsuitable because the limited class hours (30–45 hours per semester) cannot accommodate their specific needs. Accordingly, this textbook was developed based on four design principles: efficiency, practicality, learner engagement, and instructor support. Grammar and vocabulary were selected according to frequency, communicative function, and relevance to university life. Each unit consists of two lessons organized around ‘Vocabulary–Grammar–Speaking,’ followed by integrated activities in ‘Listening, Reading, Writing, and the You and I Talk Talk’ task, which helps learners convert English-based comprehension into Korean expression, thereby reinforcing productive language skills. The textbook is composed of two volumes, balancing everyday and university-related themes, so that learners can acquire communicative competence both inside and outside the classroom while enhancing motivation and confidence. This study highlights a textbook development case reflecting the unique needs of English Track students under limited instructional hours and provides practical implications for future textbook development.
