Growth Performance of Growing Pigs at Different Dietary Benzoic Acid Levels

초록

This study investigated the effect of different dietary benzoic acid (BA) levels on the growth performance of growing pigs. The study was performed using 90 crossbred ([Yorkshire × Landrace] × Duroc) pigs (45 barrows and 45 gilts) of average weight of 28.9 ± 2.52 kg. Animals were assigned to three treatments comprised of corn-soybean meal-based diets containing 0%, 1%, or 2% of BA using a randomized complete block design. Each treatment had six replicates, with five pigs per pen. The experimental period lasted six weeks and consisted of two phases (0-3 weeks and 3-6 weeks). The MIXED procedure in SAS was used, and linear and quadratic effects were tested using orthogonal polynomial contrasts (p < 0.05). Body weight decreased linearly with BA level after 3 (p = 0.049) and 6 (p = 0.039) weeks. A linear decrease in average daily gain was observed from 0 to 3 weeks (p = 0.034) and 0 to 6 weeks (p = 0.038). Dietary BA levels did not affect average daily feed intake or gain-to-feed ratio. In conclusion, supplementing BA at levels ranging from 0% to 2% in diet may have a negative impact on the growth performance of growing pigs.
