월정(月汀) 윤근수(尹根壽) ｢만록(漫錄)｣의 내용적 특징과 의의 -중국 관련 기록을 중심으로-

This paper examines the content characteristics and significance of the records related to China in 「Manrok(漫錄)」, included in Volume 4 of the Supplementary Collection of 『Woljeongjip(月汀集)』, authored by Woljeong Yun Geun-su(尹根壽, 1537～1616), a prominent scholar-official of the mid-Joseon period. Yun Geun-su demonstrated outstanding diplomatic capabilities during his four missions to the Ming capital, Yanjing(present-day Beijing). Notably, he played a significant role in introducing and disseminating the Ming literary movement known as Archaism(擬古主義), represented by the Former and Latter Seven Masters(前後七子), to Joseon. His diplomatic experiences and literary exchanges had a profound influence on his literary world, which was vividly reflected throughout his collected works, particularly in 「Manrok」. 「Manrok」 consists of 172 records, covering a wide range of topics related to both China and Joseon. The sections concerning China include introductions to various figures encountered during the four diplomatic missions to Yanjing, accounts of diverse experiences, and records of contemporary literary trends in the Ming dynasty. Additionally, 「Manrok」 provides historical verifications, descriptions of geography, nature, and customs, as well as critical evaluations of poetry, prose, and calligraphy. This study focuses on the sections related to China in 「Manrok」 and examines content characteristics. First, Woljeong introduced Ming dynasty figures he met during his diplomatic missions, providing detailed descriptions of their appearances and personalities based on his direct observations. He also recorded special anecdotes related to these individuals. Second, Woljeong extensively recorded not only China's territory, geography, and historical sites but also changes in customs such as dialects, proverbs, names of objects, and dietary habits. In particular, his firsthand experiences and anecdotes of flora and fauna, which he had previously known only through texts, are noteworthy. Lastly, through his critiques of Chinese poets', writers', and calligraphers' works, Woljeong's literary sensibility and aesthetic preferences could be confirmed. A comprehensive review of the China-related sections reveals that Woljeong diligently recorded not only his own experiences during the missions to Yanjing and visits to Guangning and Liaodong but also the stories he heard from others. As a result, 「Manrok」 contains diverse information about Ming dynasty figures, society, culture, and natural environment observed from the perspective of a Joseon envoy. Furthermore, it includes numerous unique anecdotes and vivid records rarely found in other historical sources, thereby holding significant value as a historical and cultural resource.
