초록

Shin Saimdang has undergone various image transformations, particularly after her death, often being idealized as a model for women’s education. These representations projected an image of womanhood aligned with the socio-cultural expectations of different historical periods, frequently diverging from historical reality. In this context, it is essential to critically reconsider the constructed perception of Shin Saimdang, whose legacy continues to exert significant influence on contemporary Korean women. The idealized image of Shin Saimdang—as a perfect mother who successfully educated her children and a woman who overcame numerous hardships—largely stems from myth rather than historical fact. In reality, she lived during the Joseon Dynasty, a time when women’s public and artistic activities were highly constrained. Despite these limitations, she was recognized as a painter, and the title Saimdang itself reflects her role in directing the moral and intellectual upbringing of her family, including seven siblings. Rather than pursuing personal success, Shin Saimdang emphasized intrinsic values such as familial affection, art, and scholarship. Such a life, grounded in essential humanistic values, offers a compelling counter-narrative to the current education climate in Korea, which is often dominated by an excessive focus on academic achievement and entrance examinations. This paper seeks to explore the educational implications of Shin Saimdang’s more historically grounded persona, offering alternative insights into the roles of women in family and society. Re-examining her life from a realistic perspective provides a meaningful foundation for rethinking the direction of modern women’s education and parental education of children.
