1920년대 조선과 ‘괴기’의 등장 -최남선 발행의 『괴기』 잡지를 중심으로

초록

The magazine 怪奇, published by Choi Nam-seon in 1929, was a grotesque publication marked by contradictions and internal fissures, such as its emphasis on the superiority of Koreans alongside a political orientation toward excluding those deemed genetically inferior. The grotesque outcome that 怪奇 ultimately embodied can be understood as the product of the diverse sociocultural conditions of colonial Korea in which Choi, as a Korean intellectual, was situated: the premodern realities of a country that could only receive Western modern thought and culture in fragmented form through the mediation of Japan; the political circumstance of being a colony under the Empire’s sharp censorship; and the dissonance between modern ideas and premodern realities.
