A Comparative Study on the Distribution and Borrowing Methods of Loanwords in Korean and Chinese Neologisms

This study examined the distribution and borrowing methods of loanwords in Korean and Chinese neologisms over the last decade. In modern society, international cultural exchanges have been becoming more active and deepening daily, as globalization accelerates. It is thus conceivable that not only are loanwords in neologisms increasing in quantitative terms, but their types and characteristics are becoming more diverse. Nor is borrowing loanwords limited to a direct borrowing of English and other foreign languages. Rather, borrowing can also happen by coming alongside the native language or by certain morphological changes. Given this, one must closely to examine the phenomenon of borrowing loanwords in Korean and Chinese neologisms. By adopting the etymological and morphological perspective, this study systematically classified the methods of borrowing loanwords; it also investigated the annual distribution of Korean-Chinese neologisms according to the classification. This study’s results regarding loanword borrowing in Korean-Chinese neologisms over the past 10 years can offer some insights for language policy establishment in Korea and China.
