여학생의 학교스포츠클럽 참여 경험에 대한 질적 사례연구

초록

This study aimed to explore the experiences and meanings of female students’ participation in a school sports club. To this end, a qualitative case study was conducted on a girls’ table tennis club at Gyeoul Elementary School (pseudonym). Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observations with six female students who had participated in the club for more than two years. The findings revealed that the participants experienced being central actors in school physical education and were able to engage in physically active daily routines through their table tennis club involvement. Over the course of long-term participation, they built deep and trusting relationships with their teacher and had opportunities for self-reflection, which led to a strong sense of satisfaction. Moreover, the unique characteristics of table tennis—being a non-aggressive and widely accessible sport—enabled the students to participate in physical activities while remaining within the bounds of socially accepted femininity. This helped them feel like valued members of the school. However, the participants expressed regret over the decline of the table tennis club following a change in the teacher, who had strongly supported girls’ sports. Based on these results, this study discusses how the participants’ experiences reflect the male-dominated culture of school physical education and represent a form of resistance to it. The study also highlights the lack of structured protocols to promote girls’ participation in physical activities and provides implications for activating girls’ sports engagement in schools.
