Revisiting Null Argument Phenomena in Korean: A Movement-Based Approach to Ellipsis

This paper re-evaluates null argument phenomena in Korean by critically assessing previous approaches, including LF-copying, PF-deletion, and pro-form analyses. While these earlier accounts attempt to explain the asymmetry between overt and covert extraction from ellipsis sites, they encounter significant theoretical and empirical challenges. In addition, Park's (in press) recent framework, which relies on selective phonological feature removal in narrow syntax, proposes a novel explanation but lacks a sufficient theoretical foundation, particularly concerning the role of v as an ellipsis licensor. By revisiting key examples and introducing new data, this paper argues for a movement-based approach that resolves the shortcomings of prior analyses. The movement analysis not only explains the impossibility of overt extraction and the permissibility of covert movement but also aligns with the minimalist program's commitment to cyclic derivation.
