Purpose: This study is to present a theoretical framework for male Pilates instructors' experiences of gender inequality by exploring the process by which they experience gender inequality during their teaching activities based on grounded theory methods. Through this, we aim to provide basic data to guide the perception of male instructors in the field of Pilates in a developmental direction. Methods: This study according to the grounded theory method, which is one of the qualitative research methods. In this study, 10 male Pilates instructors with more than 1 year of teaching experience were selected as research participants. Data was collected through in-depth interviews. First, concepts that constitute gender inequality among male Pilates instructors are derived and categorized. Second, by understanding the concept of gender inequality among male Pilates instructors, we build a substantive theory of the overall process. The study was conducted with the goal of finding and understanding the core meaning in the process of experience through a substantive theory of gender inequality among male Pilates instructors. Results & Conclusion: The causal situation of the process of overcoming gender inequality of male Pilates instructors was revealed as a male Pilates instructor who recognized the value of scarcity and was insecure about his entry into Pilates and his position. The contextual situation was first revealed as the gender discomfort felt during the Pilates instructor training course, the gender distance felt when entering the Pilates instructor training course, the gender discomfort felt by himself during the instructor training course, and the difficulties felt from female trainees during the instructor training course. Next, the gender-biased Pilates field was revealed as a Pilates site where even interview opportunities are rare, exclusion from class assignments, refusal of classes by female members, and lack of space for male instructors to wait. Finally, in Pilates, where the stereotype of a women's movement is prevalent, it was revealed as the perception that Pilates centers are spaces for women only, and the narrow-minded views and reactions toward male Pilates instructors. The central phenomenon was employment insecurity due to gender inequality. In the mediation situation, the factors hindering the employment stability of male Pilates instructors were revealed as male Pilates instructors not being recognized by Pilates operators, male Pilates instructors not being recognized by members, and male Pilates instructors' self-esteem and self-confidence decline. The factors promoting employment stability were revealed as satisfaction with oneself, self-esteem, competitiveness, and support and encouragement from major others. In the interaction strategy, gender inequality was acknowledged and compliance was acknowledged and accepted as prejudice, thought of as a process and waited, indifference and keeping an appropriate distance. Resistance to gender inequality was shown as active self-expression online and offline, increasing satisfaction with classes, participating in Pilates seminars and studies, and managing appearance and style. As a result, it was shown that moving to another Pilates center and holding out for the time being due to continued gender inequality was shown. Overcoming gender inequality was shown as strengthening Pilates expertise and competitiveness, and establishing a differentiated private center.
