越劇 ＜春香傳＞을 통해 살펴본 月梅 형상의 진화 — 百年佳約과 離別 대목을 중심으로

When it is difficult for a character tamed by Confucian discipline in humanities to directly express his or her mind, a maid or servant may appear to represent the main character’s mind. Wolmae plays such a role in Chunxiangzhuan. Wolmae plays an active role as Chunhyang’s persona, and Chunhyang hides behind the medium of Wolmae and faces external characters. Among the characters in Chunxiangzhuan, Wolmae, Chunhyang’s mother, is one of the most important person. All living things go through a process of evolution. When life is partially divided, some organs change in a developmental direction, while others degenerate. Degeneration is a part of evolution, and deterioration is not antonym for evolution. Evolution is a historical problem, so it can only be revealed through comparison with each other. This aspect of evolution can be found in the characters of the narrative. The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution of the character of Wolmae. Through comparison with Yueju Chunxiangzhaun and other editions, we would clarify which characters of Wolmae have deteriorated and which characters have been maintained and developed.
