동계(東谿) 조귀명(趙龜命) 교유 연구

초록

This study aims to comprehensively examine the social interactions(交遊) of Donggye(東谿) Jo Gwi-myeong(趙龜命, 1693～1737), a late Joseon literatus, by classifying them into three categories and clarifying their significance. First, as a prominent literary figure within the Pungyang Jo lineage, Jo Gwi-myeong was primarily responsible for educating his relatives. His instruction extended far beyond the realm of writing—encompassing everyday conduct and ethical principles—and exerted a profound influence on subsequent generations of literati. Second, Jo Gwi-myeong distinguished his relationships with fellow men of letters into ‘heartfelt friendships’(simgyo) and ‘literary friendships’(mungyo). In his youth, figures such as Im Sang-jeong(林象鼎) and Gim Hyeon-taek(金玄澤) belonged to the realm of simgyo, characterized by emotional rather than literary exchange. As he later resided in Hamyang and Cheongju, and eventually settled in the capital(京師) during his final years, his literary friendships expanded considerably, spanning from established writers like Yi Ha-gon(李夏坤) and Yi Deok-su(李德壽) to younger literati such as Hwang Gyeong-won(黃景源) and Nam Yu-yong(南有容). Third, Jo’s interactions with the Buddhist monks Jeonghye(定慧), Manhun(萬薰), and Taewu(泰宇) reveal his keen perception of Buddhism. Notably, his decision to include over ten letters exchanged with these monks in his collected works—compiled during his lifetime—serves as a rare and distinctive example of such literary records.
