아버지-자녀 관계와 대학생의 사회적 관계에 관한 질적 연구: 근거이론의 적용

Qualitative Study on the Father-Child Relationship and College Students’ Social Relationships: An Application of Grounded Theory

초록

This study explored how the perceived relationship of college students with their fathers is associated with their social relationships. The interview data of 10 college students were analyzed based on grounded theory; 38 concepts, 14 sub-categories, and 6 core categories were produced. First, the absence of the father while growing up seemed to result in the avoidance of communication and further stagnation of the father-child relationship. Second, participants tended to report that their social relationships were similar to their father's interpersonal relationships. Although participants attempted to improve their relationships, these efforts resulted in avoidance and the stagnation of social relationships. Third, in both the father-child relationship and social relationships, occupational demands and employment pressure affected the core phenomenon of 'uneasy social relationships' and the outcome of 'stagnation of relationships'. These findings imply that the developmental tasks of college students in early adulthood may be detoured or compromised through contextual conditions and familial experiences. A revised paradigm model was applied to account for the parallel and spiral relationships between these two areas. Lastly, intervention plans and future research were discussed.
