만주를 둘러싼 일본과 미국의 대립에 관한 연구 ―남만주철도 문제를 중심으로―

초록

This study examines the South Manchuria Railway issue as a key point of conflict and contention between Japan and the United States in the early 20th century. It discusses how this issue triggered tensions and analyzes Japan’s foreign policy stance and diplomatic activities as the conflict developed. By exploring U.S. countermeasures in response to Japan’s expansionist ambitions, as revealed by the South Manchuria Railway issue, the study attempts to uncover the political, economic, and security implications underlying the Japan-U.S. rivalry over Manchuria. The analysis is structured around several key themes: Japan’s perception of Manchuria and Russia’s southward expansion; the U.S. proposal to neutralize the South Manchuria Railway and Japan’s rejection of it; and Japan’s monopolistic policy in Manchuria, which led to a rift in Japan-U.S. relations. This research is based on qualitative analysis of historical sources, with a foundation in diplomatic history, and incorporates international political theories such as geopolitics as analytical tools.
