민주화 이후 한국 사회의 권위주의 체제 지지 지속 요인 분석

An Analysis of the Determinants of Support for Authoritarian Regimes in Post-Democratization Korean Society

초록

This study examines the determinants of enduring authoritarian nostalgia in South Korea by applying five theoretical models. The empirical analysis shows that authoritarian nostalgia is rooted in a multidimensional set of factors. The Asian values model—measured through attitudes toward social conflict—significantly predicts both authoritarian nostalgia and reduced support for democratic governance. The performance-based framework also demonstrates explanatory power across multiple domains. The economic growth-first model emerges as a strong predictor of both nostalgia for authoritarian rule and explicit support for authoritarian governance. Within the government performance model, negative assessments of the state’s ability to meet basic needs—such as food, clothing, and shelter—are strongly linked to authoritarian nostalgia. In the democratic performance model, two variables—perceived lack of genuine electoral choice and low institutional trust—play a decisive role in shaping support for authoritarian alternatives. The findings underscore the need for policy interventions that adopt a comprehensive and multidimensional strategy, addressing both cultural value orientations and perceptions of institutional performance in order to counter the appeal of authoritarianism.
