洒落から慰めへ -山東京伝『令子洞房』に見る洒落本の情動的な変容-

This study examines Musukobeya(令子洞房, 1785) by Santo Kyoden(山東京伝), a late Edo-period sharebon set in the pleasure quarters. Unlike conventional sharebon, which guide the Hankatsu(半可通) toward the ideal Tsujin(通人) through humor and wit, Musukobeya exposes the exploitation of Yujo(遊女), including economic burdens, emotional labor, and bodily sacrifice, in the chapter “Joro no minoue” (女郎の身のうへ). This affective shift from laughter to Nagusame (慰め, consolation) invites ethical reflection rather than mere sympathy. Yujo are commodified through Shinzodashi(新造出し) and Mizuage(みずあげ), and prove their affection through Kishomon(起請文), Yubikiri(指切), or Horimono(彫物), which are considered acceptable forms of sacrifice. Even escape is confined to fleeing or Shinju(心中). This hierarchy reflects the brothel’s logic, in which invisible damage is tolerated while visible and lasting harm is forbidden. Without overt critique, Kyoden renders this violence visible, unsettling the reader’s amusement. In doing so, Musukobeya marks a turning point in the genre, repositioning the Yujo as a subject of feeling. This study reframes sharebon as an affective medium and calls for further analysis of Kyoden’s later works to illuminate this transformation.
