The gender imbalance and higher outmigration of women and youth in manufacturing and heavy industry cities operate as mechanisms deepening urban crisis beyond demographic phenomena. This study focused on industrial patriarchy as a factor reinforcing gendered spaces in industrial cities and conducted labor statistics analysis and activity-travel pattern analysis using personal travel surveys in nine Special Industrial Crisis Response Regions. Results revealed that gender employment gaps in special areas significantly exceed national averages, with pronounced economic activity cessation among family-formation-stage women in Ulsan Dong-gu and Geoje City. While male wages in heavy industry cities surpass national averages, women’s wages remain limited, confirming gender-based economic imbalances. Activity-travel analysis found that gendered space in special areas was markedly greater than in control groups. This study suggests that overcoming industrial city crises requires industrial restructuring alongside gender-inclusive job creation, career planning for women and youth, and work-family balance support systems. It emphasizes the urgent need to integrate gender perspectives into special area policies.
