초록

This paper examines the validity of D. Benatar’s anti-natalist argument. D. Benatar defends anti-natalism. He argues that existence is harmful and it is better never to have been on the basis of the ‘asymmetry of pain and pleasure’ argument. However, his asymmetry argument leans toward negative utilitarianism that emphasizes the avoidance of pain and his justification argument suffers from several problems. He also negatively evaluates our lives, arguing that our lives are a great harm because they involve pain. However, his ‘quality of life’ argument is problematic in that it leans toward pessimism and relies on a specific perspective on quality of life. His anti-natalist argument has limitations in that it is not only counterintuitive but also lacks valid evidence.
