여성선수들에 대한 성폭력, 왜 숨길 수밖에 없는가! : Bourdieu의 상징폭력을 중심으로

The purpose of this study was to analyze, through Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence, the structural reasons why female athletes remain silent after experiencing sexual violence. To achieve this, a case study was conducted involving four former elite female athletes who had experienced sexual violence, selected through snowball sampling. Data were primarily collected through in-depth interviews. The results are as follows: First, athletic coaches function as absolute authorities who control athletes’ future careers and educational opportunities, placing athletes in a hierarchical structure where they cannot challenge the symbolic capital of their coaches and must comply. Second, the male-centered culture and hierarchical norms deeply embedded within sports teams led female athletes to perceive sexual violence as natural or acceptable, rather than problematic. Third, female athletes choose silence through self-censorship due to fear of exclusion or being sidelined within the team. Ultimately, female athletes engage in self-censorship after experiencing sexual violence, and choose silence as a survival strategy in order to continue their athletic careers.
