복화술(腹話術)과 역도병(逆倒病) - 이상 시 「황의 기 작품 제2번」 연구 -

초록

Yi-Sang’s poem “Hwang’s Record, Work No. 2” is a part of the “Hwang” series, alongside “1931 (Work No. 1)” and “Work No. 3”. However, its overarching narrative has not been sufficiently examined. This study examines the concepts of “ventriloquism” and “reversal sickness (逆倒病)” to analyze the text and explore an aspect of Yi-Sang’s avant-garde thought expressed in “Hwang’s Record”. Both “Hwang” (獚) and “Doctor R” in the poem are products of ventriloquism, with Doctor R embodying a dualistic worldview rooted in modern scientific knowledge. The study links the “Sacrificial Animal Memorial Monument” motif in “Hwang’s Record” to the “Experimental Animal Memorial Tower” built in 1922 at the medical annex of Keijō Imperial University, highlighting the specific significance of Doctor R. After Doctor R’s death, the narrator transcends modern dualism but subsequently suffers from reversal sickness. This sickness is cured by Hwang, a symbol of animality, who drops a “metal flower” into the narrator’s mouth, neutralizing both “knowledge” and “sickness.” The “metal flower” symbolizes a monistic view of life that overcomes the violent dichotomies of modernity, aligning with Yi-Sang’s avant-garde ideas that aim to surpass modern civilization. Yi-Sang’s critical stance toward modern scientific knowledge and his aspiration for a new civilization necessitate the use of ventriloquism to conceal his ideological stance. Through the metaphor of a protective “hat,” Yi-Sang both articulates his vision for a new civilization and documents its inexpressibility. Ultimately, the narrative of “Hwang’s Record” dismantles the modern logic of identity sustaining the human “subject” and challenges the natural science-based dichotomies—such as human versus animal and organism versus inorganic matter—reflecting Yi-Sang’s intense philosophical engagement with envisioning a “new” civilization.
