초록

This study reinterprets the records of construction projects found in the Dorim narrative (from the reign of King Gaero in the Samguk Sagi) not as historical events of the Hanseong Baekje period, for which archaeological evidence has been sought, but as literary devices that borrow from Chinese classical motifs. The study finds that the Dorim narrative is a literary work from the Unified Silla period, reconstructed by combining local traditions from the Hansan region with narrative strategies from Chinese literature. Elements such as the 'steamed-earth fortification' (a projection of the tyranny associated with Tongwan Fortress from the Book of Jin), the 'large stones from the Ukri River' (the excess of the First Qin Emperor's mausoleum), and the 'Saseong-Sungsan embankment' (the Hozidogu disaster of Emperor Wu of Han) are identified as literary projections. Furthermore, the associated place names are not simple borrowings but the result of intentionally 'overlaying' the implications of Chinese historical accounts onto the place names of the Unified Silla Hansan region. This literary reconstruction serves as a sophisticated narrative strategy to maximize the theme of King Gaero's foolishness and the resulting national ruin. The true historical value of the Dorim narrative lies not in verifying its factuality, but in demonstrating how the 'collective memory' of the fall of Hanseong Baekje was literarily reconstructed and transmitted during the Unified Silla period. The study further suggests that the archetype (原型) of this 'memory' may be based on the initial perceptions and trauma of the Baekje people who directly experienced the fall of Hanseong. Thus, this study points out the limitations of a literal interpretation and direct archaeological correlation of the Dorim narrative, proposing the need for a new reading that considers its literary nature and the historical context of its formation.
