Formalized Trairūpya and Reinterpreted Avinābhāva

초록

This paper aims to analyze logically the dilemma that arises when attempting to formalize the trairūpya of Buddhist logic and to construct an alternative model of trairūpya. When formalizing trairūpya, there are two types of interpretation depending on whether the pakṣa (logical subject) is included in or excluded from the domain. First, according to inclusive trairūpya, while the logical subject is allowed to be included in the domain, multiple discriminative combinations lose their capacity to identify asādhāraṇa-hetvābhāsa (uncommon fallacious reason). Also, there seems to be a problem of structural circularity. Conversely, according to exclusive trairūpya, which excludes the logical subject from the domain, while most of the problems that arose in inclusive trairūpya are resolved, it encounters a new problem of domain transfer. Here, I suggest a new trairūpya model that can overcome both the problem of structural circularity and domain transfer, based on the concept of avinābhāva (inseparable connection). In the new trairūpya I envision, the introduction of a reinterpreted inseparable connection ensures a weak-necessary connection between hetu (probans) and sādhya (probandum), thereby providing a partial resolution to the problems that emerged in the previous two trairūpya models. After constructing the new model, I analyze a case of viruddhāvyabhicārin (antinomic inference). Through this, I test the practical applicability of the new model and demonstrate that it can identify, though not in all cases but in some cases, which argument is invalid in situations of viruddhāvyabhicārin.
