In 1724, Habin(河濱) Sin Hudam(慎後聃) joined Seongho(星湖) Yi Ik(李瀷)’s school at the age of twenty-three and remained his disciple until death. Though encouraged to pursue his goals independently, tensions arose between them. However, their relationship endured due to Seongho’s tolerant attitude. Their debate on the Zhouyi became active after Seongho published the Yeokgyeong Jilseo(『易經疾書』: Quick Notes on the Yijing) in 1747. This paper examines four materials: Juyeok Sangsa Sinpyeon(『周 易象辭新編』: New Edition of the Xiang Statements of the Zhouyi), Yeokgyeong Jilseo, Sangseongho Nonyeokgyeongjilseo Byeolji(上 星湖論易經疾書別紙: Additional Sheets attached to the discussion of the Yeokgyeong Jilseo), and Dapsiniromunmokmujin(『答愼耳老問 目戊辰』: Answer to the questions asked by Sin Hudam in the year 1748). The latter two reveal direct exchanges between Yi Ik and Sin Hudam. Notably, Dapsiniromunmokmujin shows Seongho’s critique of Sin’s Zhouyi interpretation. Sin’s Juyeok Sangsa Sinpyeon was completed in 1736 and revised in 1758, with later edits in 1762 and 1831. The current version reflects the 1831 edition by Sinsin(愼信), not the original. If Sin had accepted Seongho’s critique, changes should appear in the 1758 revision — but they do not. This suggests Sin remained convinced of his views and may have seen flaws in Seongho’s theory, possibly believing his own interpretation to be superior in some respects.
