Analysis of Undergraduate Mathematics Department Curricula at the Top 50 U.S. Universities

초록

This study examines the undergraduate mathematics curricula of the top 50 universities ranked by U.S. News, in response to the changing landscape of higher education and mathematics instruction. Through a comprehensive analysis of course structures, credit distributions, and year-level distributions, the study identifies key patterns and trends in curricular design. The results indicate that U.S. universities allocate approximately 32% of total mathematics credits to foundational courses such as calculus and linear algebra, aiming to address learning gaps and strengthen core competencies. Several universities offer seminar and research-based courses to foster inquiry-oriented learning and academic communication at the undergraduate level. Additionally, industrial mathematics and statistics courses were structured on a scale comparable to that of traditional theoretical mathematics, highlighting the importance of practical mathematical competence. These findings offer meaningful implications for the restructuring of mathematics curricula in domestic universities, particularly with regard to differentiated foundational support, exploratory learning models, and industry-linked course design.
