Methods and Significance of Calculation of Uplift Rates by Analysis of Marine Terraces

초록

The uplift rate is calculated by dividing the uplift height of marine terrace by its formation age. Two main methods are used to calculate the uplift rate (uplift rate 1 and uplift rate 2). For uplift rate 1, the sea level altitude at the time of the marine terrace formation is considered as the present sea level, and the formation age is taken as the measured absolute date. For uplift rate 2, the sea level altitude at the formation time is considered as the interglacial highstand sea level, and the formation age is taken as the measured age of the interglacial highstand. At 28 sites along the coast of Korea, uplift rate 2 shows a larger spatial deviation and a higher average value than uplift rate 1. In particular, uplift rate 1 and 2 show different order relations for each interglacial highstand. This issue is believed to be due to the difference between the sea level of the korean coast and the global sea level at highstand periods. The sea level altitude of the interglacial highstand in Korea was calculated through the difference between uplift rate 1 and 2. As a result, assuming the relative sea level of MIS 5e in Korea is 0m, the relative sea level of MIS 5a is estimated to be -2m, MIS 5c is -4m, and MIS 7a is estimated to be -8m.
