The increase in foreign residents in South Korea post-COVID-19 has made waste sorting compliance a significant challenge for both society and foreign communities. This issue arises from South Korea’s complex waste management system and differences in practices across countries, alongside limited cultural understanding. To address these barriers, this study proposes a waste sorting education app tailored for multicultural users. This research examines factors influencing waste sorting perceptions through a comparative analysis of sorting methods, iconography, and generated content. Existing recycling education apps are reviewed, incorporating cross-cultural design principles to develop adaptive content and interactive methods. Surveys and interviews reveal short-term residents face language barriers and information gaps, while long-term residents struggle with understanding complex regulations. Personas and user journey maps were created to identify challenges and derive solutions. The app prototype includes features like a comparative guide, recycling icon recognition, gamified modules, community point systems, AI chat support, and paid waste collection services. These tools provide intuitive interfaces and engaging experiences, bridging gaps and improving adherence to South Korea’s waste sorting standards. This study helps foreign residents adapt to South Korea’s waste system, reduces sorting errors, and promotes sustainability. It highlights the importance of culturally responsive tools in addressing global environmental challenges.
