A Qualitative Study on the Recovery Experience of Social Isolation Adolescents

초록

This study aimed to explore and elucidate the meaning and essence of recovery experiences among socially isolated adolescents from their own perspectives. Using reputation case selection sampling, eight adolescents who had recovered from social isolation were recruited, and in-depth interviews were conducted. Data collection took place between August and September 2024, and the data were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological method. The analysis yielded four constituents and eleven sub-constituents. The four constituents were identified as: “Hiding Away to Protect Oneself,” “Gazing Inward,” “Taking a Step Toward the World,” and “Breaking Ties with the Past and Reconnecting with the World Anew.” The essential structure of recovery from social isolation was described as “a process of living with one’s own breath in a suffocating world by exhaling calmly rather than gasping for air.” Finally, based on the findings of this study, we discuss and propose the establishment of a medical approach system for recovery from social isolation, the creation of an environment for active participation, the development and implementation of family-based programs, and the establishment of a long-term follow-up care system.
