Far-Right Parties in Germany and Politics of Affect : From the Object of Anxiety to the Solution of Anxiety

초록

This article analyzes the support for Germany's far-right parties from the perspective of ‘politics of affect,’ focusing on citizens’ ‘anxiety.’ It aims to examine the rise of AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) after the 2015 Syrian refugee crisis through the lens of ‘affective turn.’ In the past, far-right parties were seen as a source of anxiety, but with the emergence of refugees as new source of anxiety, the far-right party, AfD, begins to be perceived as an alternative. This direction shift of affect was a result of the collapse of liberal metanarrative and the Syrian refugee crisis. The postmodern society in the late 20th century weakened the liberal metanarrative and brought about a change in value systems, prioritizing personal life’s security over liberal values. Therefore, when the Syrian refugee crisis occurred, individuals considered refugees as a source of threat to their own lives. As a result, far-right party was no longer seen as a source of anxiety, but rather as a solution to the problem. This article focuses on the affective dimension of anxiety, in analyzing citizens' support for far-right parties.
