초록

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association of dietary and serum calcium and potassium with insulin resistance indicators in healthy adults for the prevention of diabetes. Materials and methods: Anthropometric measurements, blood collection, and dietary intake surveys using 24-hours dietary recall were conducted in 640 healthy adults aged 19 - 69 years. Dietary nutrient intake, and serum levels of calcium, potassium, glucose, and insulin were analyzed. Results: The average age of both males and females was 43.7 years. Daily energy intake was 2,093.9 kcal for males and 1,795.5 kcal for females. Serum calcium was significantly correlated with insulin resistance indicators, including fasting insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI), especially in women. In addition, the serum calcium of females with insulin resistance was significantly higher than that of normal females. For potassium, serum levels showed a significant association with fasting serum glucose, but no significant association with insulin resistance was found. Conclusion: Among dietary and serum calcium and potassium, serum calcium was found to be significantly associated with insulin resistance especially in women.
