미얀마 고급 한국어 학습자의 함축 이해 능력에 관한 연구

초록

This study investigates the comprehension and interpretation abilities of advanced Myanmar learners of Korean in relation to Korean conversational implicature. The research was guided by the following questions: (1) What differences exist between native Korean speakers and advanced Myanmar learners in their understanding of Korean implicature? (2) Does the presence or absence of residence experience in Korea affect learners’ comprehension of implicature? (3) Do the duration of Korean language study and the length of residence in Korea influence learners’ implicature comprehension? To address these questions, a questionnaire consisting of 18 items was developed and administered. The findings revealed that native Korean speakers and advanced Myanmar learners exhibited statistically significant differences in their comprehension of implicature. Specifically, native speakers showed a stronger understanding of idiosyncratic implicatures while Myanmar learners demonstrated higher accuracy in interpreting formulaic implicatures. Additionally, learners with experience residing in Korea outperformed those without such experience, with residence duration emerging as a significant factor influencing implicature comprehension. Notably, learners encountered greater difficulty in interpreting implicatures that required sociocultural background knowledge, particularly in categories such as culturally embedded meanings and indirect criticism. These results suggest the necessity for a systematic pedagogical approach to implicature instruction that reflects the typological distinctions of implicature types. Furthermore, curriculum design should take into account learners’ cultural and experiential backgrounds to enhance their pragmatic competence in Korean.
