초록

This study is based on the awareness that, despite the frequent use of the ecosystem concept in areas such as regional industries and regional innovation, theoretical discussions on the topic have not been systematically conducted. By focusing on domestic and international literature, it examines various concepts, research trends, key characteristics, criticisms, and usefulness of ecosystems, while exploring the main theoretical issues surrounding ecosystem discussions. Based on this analysis, the study proposes directions for regional industrial policy rooted in the ecosystem concept by comparing it with the theoretical foundations of South Korea’s regional industrial policies, such as the regional innovation system theory and cluster theory. The application of the ecosystem concept is useful in understanding relationships in business and innovation activities and designing ecosystem strategies in innovation and technology management. Thus, the ecosystem concept can also serve as a valuable tool in the policy domain. In regional industrial policies aimed at fostering ecosystems, policy objectives should focus on supporting the value creation of enterprises. Policy targets should include not only leading companies with the capacity to build platforms but also those companies that need or are willing to engage in ecosystem development. Furthermore, as companies have different roles and positions within ecosystems, the need for tailored policies for individual companies becomes increasingly important.
