There is no doubt that one of the key themes in Tolstoy's works is family and home. In this context, the foundation of forming a family and home is love and marriage. For Tolstoy, the concepts of love, marriage, home, and family are deeply interconnected. This article aims to examine the meanings of love, sexuality, and marriage in Tolstoy's works through an analysis of his later work, The Kreutzer Sonata, along with his own afterword, Afterword to The Kreutzer Sonata. This work has been selected for analysis because it provoked significant reactions and intense debate upon its publication, prompting Tolstoy to write an afterword. Additionally, the author’s views on love, sexuality, and marriage are clearly articulated in the work. Therefore, this article will first review the various critiques surrounding the work and then elucidate the context in which Tolstoy wrote it, as well as his arguments regarding love, sexuality, and marriage as presented in the work.
