This paper re-examines Nietzsche’s concept of the will to power, focusing on power relations and conflicts. This topic remains highly relevant in contemporary society, where various conflicts continue to arise and solutions are persistently sought. However, the ongoing demand for resolutions may indicate not the disappearance of conflict but its continual recurrence. From Nietzsche’s perspective, the relationship between power and power conflicts naturally emerges from his fundamental proposition that the will seeks power. Importantly, judgments of right or wrong in such reasoning can themselves be understood as expressions of particular forms of the will to power. Rather than seeking fixed notions of right or wrong, this paper approaches the issue by accepting Nietzsche’s basic assumptions and exploring new frameworks of thought based on them. The study contrasts several major interpretations of Nietzsche’s will to power, particularly concerning conflicts of power. It introduces the views of Heidegger, Gerhardt, and Schlimgen, who critique Nietzsche as a metaphysician, and presents counterarguments to Poellner’s criticism of Nietzsche’s anti-essentialism. It also examines Muller-Lauter’s and Grimm’s perspectives, who do not regard Nietzsche as a metaphysician. Finally, Alain Badiou’s interpretation is discussed to offer alternative perspectives on the will to power. Overall, this study demonstrates that Nietzsche’s will to power is not merely a theoretical construct but provides a space for diverse interpretations and intellectual engagement. By engaging with these ideas and texts, scholars can cultivate new modes of thought and experience intellectual vitality and pleasure, rather than being constrained by existing frameworks.
