Taejo Wang Geon established Cheonan-bu(天安府) in 930. This article was prepared to examine whether Cheonheungsa(天興寺) existed around this time. Taejo focused on the current Cheonan main city area, which had no regional power and was not affected by rebellion. Taejo embraced various ideas, and he did so in the Cheonan-bu area as well. In particular, Taejo actively utilized geomancy in the Cheonan area. Such actions of Taejo can be called ‘political geomancy’. Taejo, who particularly emphasized heaven and the mandate of heaven, used this politically. The name Cheonheung(天興) of Cheonheungsa Temple is a name borrowed from the sky, and it was a word that fit Taejo’s disposition. By examining the time Taejo stayed at Suheulwon, it was estimated that Cheonheungsa Temple was founded around September 936, when the unification war was over. Taejo’s geomancy was applied in the Cheonan area. Taejo used it to win the war. He hoped for the stability and prosperity of the world through Cheonheungsa. He founded a temple on Seonggeosan where ‘political geomancy’ was applied. Taejo called it the mandate of heaven. The temple was named Cheonheungsa.
