경건한 군주와 마귀 들린 소녀― 17세기 피렌체의 국가-교회 관할권 갈등에 관한 연대기 서사 분석 ―

Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici emphasized religious piety and made effort to strengthen control over the entire the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in order to respond to the complex geopolitical changes in Europe and overcome the impact of famines and epidemics. To weaken the religious patriarchy of the local churches with strong autonomous traditions and to establish the patriarchy of duke, it was necessary to intervene in the conservatories, which had long been considered under the religious jurisdiction. This brought state and church into conflict with the powers that traditionally ran conservatories. In the context of the ongoing dispute between the state and the church over the jurisdiction of charitable institutions, the Dominican Fra Romano Viccioni wrote a chronicle of conservatorio della Pietà, which revealed the involvement of a demonic possessed girl in Cosimo III's attempts to reform the conservatorio. This avoided direct accusations against the Grand Duke and stigmatised girls who sought to escape Dominican control. However, the “Breve notizia” included in the chronicle sought to reinforce internal control over the girls in the Pietà by emphasizing the virtue of obedience through examples of girls who had overcome demonic possession. This showed that the narrative of demonic possession remained a valid influence on women until the end of the seventeenth century.
