초록

This study aims to critically reflect on the issues in Korean education by examining the educational philosophy of Herbert Spencer, a British educator with a similar educational background, and exploring the characteristics of his educational theory to propose implications for Korean school education. Spencer emphasized the harmonious intellectual, moral, and physical development, moving away from traditional education focused on rote memorization and classical knowledge. He stressed the importance of education related to science, which is connected to life, and highlighted the educational growth of students in accordance with natural laws, rather than artificial ones, in line with his theory of evolution. The implications of his educational theory for Korean school education are as follows: There is a need to re-examine what should be taught in our schools. For true education in intellectual, moral, and physical development, a more active improvement of the curriculum and greater awareness of students are required. These issues must be addressed in a rapidly changing society.
